Gilda Mautone works on the body as a territory of transformation rather than a stable given. Branding — the hot iron mark applied to the skin — becomes a gesture that destroys and reshapes form at once; implants take the form of foreign bodies marking the birth of an increasingly post-human identity. Her figures move through practices that are at times archaic and extreme, almost contemporary rites of passage. This tension between fragility and resistance runs through her work, divided between painting — which gives visual form to fear, anxiety and inadequacy, blending the human figure with phytomorphic elements — and sculpture, built through patient manual techniques (crochet, sewing, upcycling, paper) that assemble heterogeneous materials into rebuilt bodies. Both languages treat the construction of identity as a physical, almost surgical process.
