GOLDEN AGE 2
GILDA MAUTONE
The installation stages a small domestic altar: a painting set within a blue floral frame, itself enclosed by a purple fabric drape that falls like a curtain, resting on a white plinth. The portrait depicts a smiling woman, almost in a trance, raising her hands to her head as she wears a crown of golden flames — an iconography that hovers between regal coronation and pagan ritual, between unrestrained joy and possession. Resting on the drape like an offering, a rough stone with a surface mottled in pastel colours introduces a natural, handmade element that contrasts with the pop artifice of the portrait. The fabric enveloping the image turns the painting into a relic, into an almost domestic object of devotion, evoking the idea of a golden age not as a historical era but as a momentary, luminous, unstable state of grace to be preserved and venerated. The title, "Golden Age," thus takes on a bittersweet irony: the crown's gold is painted euphoria, not a promise of eternity
